Rapunzel Flynn & Maximus

Roller-skates: is there a girl who lived her childhood through the eighties that didn’t own a pair? I had a shiny white pair with love hearts on the laces. Around and around the perimeter of my house I would race, singing Xanadu songs and loving myself sick.

But if roller-skating was the everygirl of the eighties, ice skating was her sophisticated older cousin. Ice skating had serious cred. I watched Ice Castles on repeat, the tragedy, the triumph, the rhinestone encrusted costumes. There were none so cool and beautiful as the girl on blades, camel spinning and Salchowing her heart out across the glistening ice.

Snow White & Dwarfs

Growing up in country Victoria, my figure skating dreams were always just out of reach. I went skating just once and found the reality to be a little different than in the movies. It was certainly harder to stay upright than on a pair of roller-skates, there was very little elegant gliding and a whole lot of landing on my bottom on the ice which was shockingly HARD and shockingly COLD. It never seems cold on Hollywood ice!

But inside my adult body beats the heart of that child of the eighties who still thinks ice skating is the most glamorous and glittering sport in the entire world, and part of me would still love to learn to do a triple axel. Or even just a single. One solitary axel would be a huge bucket list tick. And I'd have to be wearing those shiny, flesh coloured tights when I did it.

Cinderella & Prince 3

So when Disney on Ice comes to town, something stirs within me. This year, Disney On Ice presents Dare To Dream will be touring around Australia throughout June and July. The show features two of Disney’s modern day princess stories Tangled and The Princess and the Frog and two classic fairytales Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Cinderellabut on the ice. THE ICE! I can’t even express how exciting that sounds to me. I told my friend about it and she exclaimed what a wonderful treat for the kids to be able to see such a magical production, and I was like, “Kids? Oh yeah, I suppose I’ll take the kids along, too.” But really, this is all about my childhood dreams and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Dare to dream? You bet I do!

Hello friends

I’m Angie!  I mum. I write. I wife. My husband would say this is the correct order.  He’s so neeeedy. I live with my family in Melbourne, Australia, where I complain about the weather for 90% of the year – but I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Except maybe in Lake Como, waving to my neighbours George and Amal each morning.
