You may have caught a mention of pom poms on The Little Mumma in the last few days. You may have thought to yourself, Why does The Little Mumma keep banging on about pom poms? What the hell is with all the pom pom talk? What is she? Some kind of repressed cheerleader?
In answer to your last question, yes, if you must know, yes, I am a repressed cheerleader. And why? Because we don't have cheerleaders here in Australia. Well, we do for some professional sports but it's not an institution in schools the way it is in America. There is no try-outs ritual here as there is in the States.
And if you must know, I would have been the cutest cheerleader ALIVE.
Now, moving on.
My current pom pom obsession has less than zero to do with my repressed cheerleader-ness.
And everything to do with that picture you spied up the top of this page.
Pom Pom flowers.
LOVE
More and more, I am losing the sleek, shiny, new sensibilities I started favouring in my late 20's and am headed back to vintage is beautiful and DIY is the shizz vibe of my (penniless) youth.
For one, conserving dollars is always a bonus. But beyond that, there is beauty in old stuff. A retro piece of furniture, for instance, is likely to have been made with craftsmanship that a brand new piece just ain't. Which is so sad really.
And then, there's the whole green issue. Reusing, recycling and the uber-cool upcycling (don't ask, I don't really know myself).
In related news, we have NOT found a new place yet.
!!@*#%^!?
Every minute we spend in this house I know we're not staying in is a frustration to me. I'm bored with my space but I'm stuck, in limbo, in so many ways. There are changes I would like to make, redecorating I would like to do but it seems pointless to begin anything until we are in our new place…wherever that may be.
So I'm trying to find beautiful, creative ideas to take to our new home. Things I can make myself, unusual ideas that don't cost the earth and that I won't see in a Fantastic Furniture catalogue.
So, pom pom flowers. I'm starting with pom pom flowers!
I have already made several 'test' pom poms that LD is currently loving – "FLYING POM POM!" He is quite the thrower of things which gets him into endless trouble but pom poms can be thrown with virtually no negative fallout. Go the pom pom!
I've been trawling my local op shop looking for unusual glass bottles and need to find some twiggy branches and then, voila! pretty pretty pom pom flowers!
I found the pom pom flowers on Pinterest, my other current obsession. Have you seen it? A virtual pinboard, Pinterest allows you to 'pin' a picture from anywhere on the internet to your 'boards.' So great when you see something and want to remember it – hairstyles, toys, anything. And an endless source of amazing images that other people have pinned. It's very cool.
For instance, I am hoping our new place might look like this:
Or possibly, this:

What are your current obsessions? Anything I should know about?
Holy crap! I’m moving into your new place! Those pics just grabbed me by the short ones! …and I LOVE a good upcycle! I can’t wait to see what goodies you come up with! :o)
How amaze-balls are those photos? Someone, like, lives there!
And yes, I am all about the upcycle right now. If only I knew what I mean……
Charlotte is all about the pom pom. My Mother bought her a knitting set for Xmas (yeah, thanks Mother :P)and its all things wool around here ever since. It came with a pom pom maker (we cheat, Ha!) and so there are various sized pompoms of various hues occupying copious space in my house.
Not.A.Fan.
Meanwhile, current obsession you ask? Special K. I eat it by the handful, all day – everyday. I don’t know how it came about. I would take a bath in special K if I could. My hand never leaves the cereal container and I do believe I take it with me in the car…..
I am also obsessed with plastic storeage containers, hvaing recently put EVERYTHING in m ycupboards and fridge into them. Yep, I ahve one of ‘those’ pantries now. I spend hours just gazing at it. There might be toddelr shit on the floor, and mildew in the corners, but my god – is my cupboard a thing of beauty.
Its nice to have priorities 😛
Oh and Angel, you would have made the bubbliest of bounciest cheerleaders EVER. I’m picturing it now……………* dirty little school boy snicker* xxx
Oh and if I actually had one of those bath thingys like the picture, I might actally fuck my husband. In it. Actually.
xxxx
I came across Pinterest a few months ago but, like Twitter, it didn’t really grab me… maybe I should give it another burl. I could do with some inspiration right now. That outdoor bathtub is the stuff of fantasies, for sure.
And Angie as a cheerleader? Yes. I can so picture photos of you as the teen queen cheerleader that all the girls wanted to be, and all the jock guys wanted to sling over their shoulders, caveman-style. Wait, what?
Okay, I want:
1. a pom pom maker
2. your pantry
3. you to compliment me all day long
You can, however, keep the Special K. Really, Special K?
Me too.
But not your husband.
Just to be clear. 🙂
Okay, Twitter and Pinterest? Not even in the same realm.
I didn’t get Twitter either – in fact, I am still somewhat confused by it.
Pinterest has boards that are seriously like curated art galleries. Give it another go – although beware, it’s a HUGE time suck.
Yes, I was the perfect size for shoulder tossing.
No…what?
You’ve convinced me, but there’s a waiting list. Really? For a website? Ah well. One day…
Yeah, I don’t know why they do that but you’ll get your invite in a week. Doesn’t take long at all.
ANGIE!!!!! Just checked out Pinterest…..I’m starting a photography business….and have been spending hours searching the WWW for inspiration….ahhhh so much here, I am just about peeing myself with excitement….thanks for sharing…..xxx
Oh yay, Jenny! So glad you love.
A warning, however – say goodbye to effective time management. That place will suck you into the void!
Sigh… I take it all back. I am now hooked and have wasted much of the last day or so. On the bright side, it’s getting the creative juices going (which I really needed a kick for) and I’m feeling the urge to purchase large swathes of fabric, buttons and felt. Not a sewing machine, though. I’m not quite there yet. I’ll stick to stuff that’s doable by hand.
So thank you for pointing me in this direction. I needed the insiration. x
See? See? I KNEW you would love it, Mad. I so knew.
And yes, stuff to make – felt and buttons and STUFF! And you have DAUGHTERS so the options are ENDLESS!
Meanwhile, crafting is good for the soul. So glad to have inspired you. xx
